The shape that we today identify as the ampersand (&) predates the actual term ampersand by 1,500 years. The symbol began back in the first century when Roman scribes wrote in cursive­. These scribes wrote the letters “e” and “t” together forming the Latin word “et” which means “and.” Over time, having these letters cobbled together came to signify the word and, which was carried over into the English language.
