Fabergé - Egg-shaped box
Fabergé egg-shaped box, c. 1903. Rock crystal, two-colour gold, rose diamonds. Provenance: Probably acquired by Queen Alexandra; in the Royal Collection by 1953. Birbaum, Fabergé’s chief designer, describes how rock crystal was difficult to carve because it was prone to crumbling; it was worked on only by the most experienced workmasters. As it could not tolerate heat from soldering, any settings such as the gold and diamond clasp on this box, had to be assembled with clips and pins.

Carved from nephrite, this Fabergé pot replicates the form of a pear, complete with reeded gold stem terminating in a diamond and leaves in gold, highlighted with diamonds.
