Nursing Mnemonics and Tips
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Cystic fibrosis or CF is an inherited disease of the secretory glands. Secretory glands include glands that make mucus and sweat. Inherited means the disease is passed from parents to children through genes. People who have CF inherit two faulty genes for the disease — one from each parent. The parents likely don’t have the disease themselves. CF mainly affects the lungs, pancreas, liver, intestines, sinuses, and sex organs.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is at least two, separate disorders that cause inflammation (redness and swelling) and ulceration (sores) of the small and large intestines. These two disorders are called ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Although they share some similarities, there are key differences between the two. Subtotal gastrectomy removes acid-secreting portions of the stomach. After removing the distal stomach (inset), a surgeon sutures the remaining portion of the stomach to the duodenum (Billroth I procedure) or to the proximal jejunum (Billroth II procedure). The proximal duodenum is left with the Billroth II to allow bile and pancreatic secretions to flow into the duodenum to aid digestion and neutralize acid from stomach.
