The Deep-Sea Fish with the Telescopic Tubular Eyes | Deep sea creatures, Beautiful sea creatures, Deep sea life

In a unique family of fishes, only two species exist. The longer Gigantura indica and the shorter, robust Gigantura chun, are the only known species for the family Giganturidae. The family is rather aptly named the telescope fishes because of the forward-pointing, ‘‘telescopic’’ eyes with large lenses. These eyes can be near 4% of the body length. Both fish face upward orienting those big tubular eyes toward the surface. Those eyes and orientation are thought to be an adaptation to seeing…

Layers of the Ocean - Deep Sea Creatures

Scientists have divided the ocean into five main layers. These layers, known as zones, extend from the surface to the most extreme depths where light can no longer penetrate. These deep zones are where some of the most bizarre and fascinating creatures can be found.

Discover the Hidden Depths of the Ocean

Five depth zones have been identified in the ocean. Life is most abundant in the uppermost ‘euphotic’ layer, where photosynthesis occurs. The mesopelagic is practically dark, and many creatures hide here during the day. The bathypelagic zone begins at 1,000 metres, where the pressure is nearly 100 times greater than at the surface. Below that lies the abyssopelagic zone, down to the sea floor – except where ocean trenches cut through the sea bed, creating what is called a hadopelagic zone.

Mariana Trench Diagram: Exploring the Depths of the Pacific Ocean

Mariana Trench Diagram1 Pacific Ocean's Mariana Trench at 11,033 meters (36,201 feet) deep. In order to better illustrate the actual depth of the Mariana Trench, consider the following; if Mount Everest, which is the tallest point on earth at 8,850 meters (29,035 feet), were set in the Mariana Trench, there would still be 2,183 meters (7,166 feet) of water left above it.

Stoplight Loosejaw - Deep-Sea Dragonfish Illustration

Art illustration - Oceans & Seas - Stoplight loosejaw: Are small, deep-sea dragonfishes of the genus Malacosteus, found all over the world, outside the Arctic and Subantarctic, in the mesopelagic zone below a depth of 500 meters (1,600 feet). Has a lower jaw that measures a quarter of the length of the fish. The lower jaw has no ethmoidal membrane (floor) and is only joined by the hinge and a modified lingual bone.

Oceanic Spawning Migrations of Australasian Eels

Anguillid eel populations have declined dramatically over the last 50 years in many regions of the world, and numerous species are now under threat. A critical life-history phase is migration from freshwater to distant oceans, culminating in a single life-time spawning event. For many anguillids, especially those in the southern hemisphere, mystery still shrouds their oceanic spawning migrations. We investigated the oceanic spawning migrations of the Australasian short-finned eel (Anguilla…
