Though not nearly as visited as the St. Louis Cathedral, the Immaculate Conception is still nonetheless an architectural highlight of my recent trip to New Orleans. This fairly new building (completed in 1930) in the Gothic Revival style is complemented by some lovely Venetian design elements. I was lucky to visit at Passiontide when the statues and icons were draped with purple cloth following a Lent tradition of veiling dating back centuries. In back are two baskets of palm leaves. Located in the Central Business District of New Orleans just one block off of Canal Street, the Jesuit Church is in my opinion one of the most visually striking churches in New Orleans. Father John Cambiaso, responsible for the plans for the original church, was an admirer of Moorish architecture and that admiration shines through all the details of this building, both inside and out. I apologize for the wonky angle but I couldn't get any higher with my wide angle lens to remove distortion.
