Mikhail Vasilevich Frunze (1885-1925) was a top military leader during the Russian Civil War after the end of WW1, and, later, the most influential military theoretician of the USSR. In Feb 1922, he was elected a member of the Politburo of the Communist Party. In 1924, he was appointed chief of Staff of the Red Army and Commandant of the Military Academy, which was named after him when he died in 1925 following an unsuccessful operation for stomach ulcers. The academy existed until 1998.

Zamira Sydykova: In 1992 founded Kyrgyzstan's first independent newspaper. She struggled to promote freedom of the press... Her criticism of then president Askar Akayev and his increasingly authoritarian regime resulted in her arrest and imprisonment, along with repeated attempts by the authorities to close down the newspaper. In 2000 she was awarded the Courage in Journalism award by the International Women's Media Foundation for her efforts to promote free media.
