A Martha’s Vineyard Compound Handcrafted for Making Memories
A dream team of creatives helmed by Mother Studio and Maryann Thompson Architects helped a Massachusetts family realize their timeless island idyll. The sun-drenched living area in the guest cottage showcases the beauty of reclaimed hemlock. Occupants take in views of the property’s pool and grounds from plush Kalon lounge chairs flanking a Studio Volk floor lamp beside vintage Herman Miller summer picnic posters. Photo: Nicole Franzen
Tour a Tiny Boathouse in Connecticut With Outsize Charm
It’s rare to secure a prime slice of lakeside land in the rural expanse of Litchfield County, Connecticut. At least, that was the case for a local family, who for years have owned a holiday home on a stretch of farmland a few minutes drive from the shore. When a 1916 stone house with precious water access became available, they snatched it up and commissioned AD100 designer Hadley Wiggins to bring the project to life. Photography by Tim Lenz
Tour a Light-Filled Sag Harbor House With Scandinavian Influences
The summer cottage in the Hamptons is clad in wood shingles and was gut renovated to make it ready for year-round residency. Outdoor dining and sitting areas, like the firepit surrounded by Loll Adirondack lounge chairs from Design Within Reach, stretch the square footage with indoor outdoor living. Photo by Nicole Franzen
Squire Tarbox Inn in Westport, Maine
"I was instantly struck by the considered and unique design of the Squire Tarbox Inn. It has a classic Maine farmhouse feel updated with Western details (one of the owners is from Texas) and a dark New England exterior that’s full of surprises like a vintage cowhide dresser in the lobby. The dining space reminded me of a Virginia tavern with its low ceilings, wooden beams, Windsor chairs, and a big fireplace with a large tin serving tray on the mantle." —Julia Harrison, commerce writer #sponsored
Tour a Sun Valley Ski Chalet With Charmingly Retro Energy
In the living room, designer Julia Miller, who worked with Hobbs Builders for the construction, moved a central fireplace to an exterior wall and extended the existing cedar wood planking to the ceiling to create a cozy, cocooning effect. The fireplace’s old footprint became a wrapped bookcase, which anchors a small breakfast nook that doubles as a puzzle and games center. In the bedroom, the cladding goes modern with a dramatic board and batten treatment. “It’s a huge space with very high ceilings, so this gives it a lot of dimension,” she explains. “Keep it cool.” That was the mandate designer Julia Miller received from her clients, a California-based couple who fell in love with a quirky 1980s house in Sun Valley, Idaho, that they planned to use as an adventure outpost for family fun. “I held onto that table forever waiting for the right client,” Miller says of the vintage burl wood piece in the dining room. Best Hotels Around the World, According to AD Editors: The Henson in Hensonville, New York
"Driving through tiny little towns in the Catskills, you don't necessarily expect to see an elevated hideaway like The Henson tucked away on an ordinary country road. It's elegant and well-appointed—the check-in area is chock-full of vintage and reclaimed wood with a gorgeous, seasonal bouquet of dahlias at the centerpiece. Each room unfolds with similar drama and elegance as you tour the property." Rachel Fletcher, commerce director. Photo dourtesy of The Henson #sponsored
Tour a Cozy Bedford Hills Home With a Sophisticated yet Relaxed Aesthetic
The owners of this 1930s brickwalled house in Upstate New York did not feel a special connection to the space when they purchased it three years ago. They asked interior designer Genevieve Lavelle, a relative of theirs who was just launching her own studio, to make the house warmer and more livable. Dubbed “the fireplace room,” this cozy space off the main hallways was created for just that: sitting around a hearth. Photography by Kate S. Jordan, Styled by Grace Harris

Inside an Elegant Island Retreat in the Pacific Northwest
Located on an island off the coast of Washington, the 25-acre lot offered privacy coupled with unimpeded water views. “When we moved to the Pacific Northwest over 30 years ago, we fell in love with this area,” say the homeowners, who wanted to see the beauty of the region reflected in their weekend home and a place to host many guests. “The San Juan Islands are the quintessential northwest environment, with the forests, the sea, and the mountains.” Photo by Haris Kenjar
