“Young Lady of Quality in full Dress”, 1778 For the most formal court events, women wore the robe de cour, a fossilized form of dress involving a heavily boned bodice and petticoat, but ladies more commonly wore the robe parée. This was a robe à la française worn over wide hoops and trimmed in wide bands down the front of the gown and across the bottom of the petticoat. Madame Campan described them as being worn specifically for dinners and social gatherings in the evening.
