Blissfully Sweet - Birthday Cake for Nicole I could not think of a fancy title for this cake. There are some things that are just too hard to think about. But what do you do for the person who knows you almost better than most? What do you do for the person who has constantly been apart of every single of your kids celebrations for the last 5 years and made them even more special with her graphic genius? What do you do for the person who is the first one you call when you are happy, sad, lonely, elated or generally pissed off? And what do you do for the person who when just the sound of her voice makes you know you are loved and accepted? Well if you are me - you make them a cake! But how to express all that in cake? Well I suppose it helps if you know what that person likes almost as much as you know your own likes. But it wasn't that easy. But I decided to just bake and then let happen what will happen. Hmmmm …. Nicole Hanna (aka Pretty and Print genius) was turning 40. All she wanted was to celebrate with friends and family. To not make a big fussy party at all, but just to relax and enjoy. But there had to be cake. I knew her cake had to have texture and maybe some metallics and definitely some teal/aqua. I knew all this and somehow sometime late Friday night, this cake came together! The bottom tier is my take on green patina. I love detailed wood work and I found an image on Pinterest that had a green patina finish door. I wanted to recreate this into sugar. So by adding layers or textures with hand cut elements as well as moulded appliqués and some slight texturing, the bottom tier came together and then with some rough golden touches, the patina was created. The top tier was all about the metallics. A mix of edible gold and silver lustre painted over a moulded textured tier was a simple and elegant top tier for this cake. For a colour pop, I decided to add in some flowers. I knew that Nicole loved this pink/lilac colour and at the moment, the magnolia trees are blooming everywhere. Magnolias it was, but I decided to make them in wafer paper. I wanted the softness it would create and plus I wanted to try something new and I wanted to then make a video tutorial on these wafer paper flowers. I figured if I was learning, others could too. Later tonight that video tutorial will be available on my youtube channel at youtube.com/blissfullysweet You will see how they were made from the beginning to the placement on the cake. While they are not as botanically accurate as you could make them from sugar, I love the stylised touch it gives to these beautiful blooms. Finally the cake was a hit with everyone, from the look of it and then the taste which everyone raved about! Nicole was overcome and I was elated to see her happiness and that she had a festival just to celebrate her! The cake was lemon coconut raspberry cake. Happy birthday my very sweet friend. 40 is the new black and definitely is a time to celebrate. I look forward to many many more celebrations shared together. <3 | Facebook
